Manager Challenges: what your managers say is hardest

Where the Manager Challenges view comes from, how to read it, and how to use it to shape enablement for your management layer.

Most Pulse views tell you about your reps. Manager Challenges tells you about your managers — specifically, what they say is hardest about supporting their people.

Where to find it

Click Pulse in the left-hand navigation, then open Coaching Insights and choose Manager Challenges. This view is available to Admins.

Where the data comes from

It comes from one question in the manager side of your Pulse survey:

"What's most challenging when supporting your reps? (Select up to 3)"

Managers choose up to three options from a standard list:

  • Identifying individual rep needs using data

  • Running impactful coaching with follow-through

  • Having tough performance conversations

  • Balancing coaching with other demands

  • Keeping the team motivated and focused

  • Driving consistent playbook adoption

They can also write their own answer, which appears separately rather than in the chart.

Because managers pick up to three, the totals won't add up to the number of managers who responded — one person can appear against three challenges.

What you'll see

  • A Pulse period selector, so you can look at a specific Pulse

  • A bar chart counting how many managers selected each challenge. Click a bar to see the detail behind it

  • An Other responses panel containing everything managers typed themselves

  • An Export CSV button, if you want to work with it outside Uhubs

If nothing appears, the most likely reason is that the Pulse you're looking at didn't include this question, or your managers haven't completed their side of it yet.

How to use it

Read the free-text answers first. The chart tells you which of six pre-set options managers recognised. The Other responses panel tells you what they'd say unprompted, which is usually more specific and more useful.

Look for the split between skill and capacity. "Having tough performance conversations" is a capability gap you can train. "Balancing coaching with other demands" is a workload problem, and training won't touch it — that one is about what you've asked managers to carry.

Check it against what your reps say. If managers report struggling to run coaching with follow-through, and reps are rating their managers low on connection in the same Pulse, those are the same problem seen from both ends.

Close the loop. Managers answered a survey question about what they find hard. If nothing visibly changes as a result, they'll answer less honestly next time.
